Trisoplast is a patented, highly effective and durable mineral barrier that was developed in the Netherlands by Trisoplast Mineral Liners. Its outstanding performance is simply achieved on site by mixing the special bentonite-polymer component with a mineral filler, e.g. sand. In combination with water a strong, dense, spider web like gel structure is formed as a result of the network of chemical bonds between the clay mineral particles and the polymer.

These lead to substantially better barrier properties than are found with traditional mineral barriers. Whereas the sand predominantly gives Trisoplast its mechanical strength, the bentonite-polymer gel gives it the necessary flexibility and hydraulic performance which is commonly even 100 to 1000 times better than with traditional mineral barriers. With time this difference is likely to increase as a result of the higher durability of Trisoplast.

Why innovation?
As all sealing systems, mineral barriers as well as geomembranes show certain limitations. The development of new technology or further improvement of existing systems is required in order to better deal with the various environmental conditions in which they are used. With time, every lining system shows some reduction in its performance. If performance drops below the minimum requirements to fulfil the designated function, appropriate measures have to be taken to regain the required level of protection. Thus incurring aftercare costs depend significantly on the durability of the chosen system.

Traditional mineral barriers, which are often the preferred option due to their robustness and their high natural durability, might develop harmful cracks as a result of differential settlement or desiccation. The high plasticity and the chewing-gum-like properties of Trisoplast effectively prevent these negative effects and thus avoid or reduce after care costs.

The mechanical properties, especially the high friction angles, in combination with significant cohesion values, offer the possibility of designing steeper slopes without additional reinforcement. This, in combination with a significantly lower thickness, leads to additional valuable void space. The polymer enhancement in Trisoplast also leads to a higher chemical stability and an improved sealing performance.

Trisoplast offers a number of advantages compared to other sealing systems, resulting in a very cost effective, durable high level of environmental protection.
