Majorca works startedMajorca works started

MAJORCA - On 9 June 2010 works have started on the capping of the Son Reus landfill on the island of Majorca, Spain. The Son Reus landfill is located just 15 km north of the city of Palma, capital of the Balearic Islands. It contains municipal waste, inert construction waste and residues from the incinerator adjacent to the site. In a flat landscape it rises to a height of 35 meters.

Son Reus

Son Reus is the main waste facility for the island of Majorca, which, apart from a permanent population of 850.000 receives approximately 12 million holidaymakers from all over the world every year, generating substantial amounts of waste.

Landfill capping

The current works comprise the capping of a total surface of 310.000 m² with the mineral barrier Trisoplast®. Approximately two thirds of the works consist of slope applications at 1:2½.

A mobile mixing plant was set up on site for the production of the Trisoplast mixture. Trisoplast consists of a special bentonite-polymer component which is mixed with a mineral filler, e.g. sand. When the first water is absorbed by the Trisoplast layer this causes the bentonite to swell and form a network of chemical bonds with the dissolved polymer, creating a strong, dense hydrogel structure, making the layer impermeable.

Partnership

Süd-Chemie España supplied the bentonite, whereas the special Trisoplast polymer was derived from Trisoplast Mineral Liners in the Netherlands. Grupo Terratest is responsible for the production and installation of the Trisoplast mineral barrier.

Works are expected to be completed by early October.
